Though its meaning has somewhat changed in the seventy years of its existence, the important activities performed for the preservation of Slovenian archival cultural heritage have remained the same throughout this time.

  • Our Land is in the Heart of Europe

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the premiere of the first Slovenian feature film titled On Our Land, an achievement that was a sign of maturity of Slovenian film-makers. The film was very successful, but its success covered up a number of problems that occurred during its shooting. Detailed and at times tragicomic reports from the shooting of the film that was initially to be titled In the Heart of Europe talk about the crew's problems with the weather, actors, electricity, pyrotechnics, vehicles, and about technical complications in general.

  • The Rent-Roll for the Seigniory of Brdo pri Kranju (Egkh) and for the Estates of Naklo (Naclas) and Primskovo (Primskau)

The rent-roll (Handurbar) for the seigniory of Brdo pri Kranju and for the estates of Naklo and Primskovo from the period 1705–1718 is one of the 21 rent-rolls currently kept by the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia (RS), which were compiled between ca. 1520 and 1782 for the core or the individual parts of these estates. Having been damaged so severely by bookworm and other causes that it was rendered almost unusable, the book was eventually "revived" by our colleagues at the Book and Paper Conservation Centre of the Archives, which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.

  • »And Apart From All This There Are Also the Wolves /…/« or »Lupus homini lupus«

Although it was recently discovered within the scientific project Slowolf that in Slovenia there hasn't been a case of wolf attacking humans for the last 100 years, the report written by the deputy representative of the Ribnica District Department of National Security paints a different story. Namely, in winter 1945 two members of OZNA had a rather unpleasant experience with wolves in the wooded hinterland of Ribnica.

  • »On the 1st of August I Open, Even If We Have Nothing Else but a Single Chamber Pot!« (Dr. Josip Cholewa)

Notes from the diary of Dr. Franc Novak about the work of the Banovina Institute for Research and Treatment of Tumors in Ljubljana are an extraordinary historical source. Through them a reader is able to perceive Dr. Novak as an ambitious co-founder of Slovenian oncology, and even more so as a dedicated and thorough chronicler of events and people involved in its formation. What is particularly interesting about his diary entries is that he added to them a number of documents.

  • »The Pope Loves You All!«

The visit of Pope John Paul II. in May 1996, is was one of the most resounding state visits since independence for the young Slovenian state. The organization of the visit was demanding and involved the participation of both state and church institutions. The Archivalia of May shows he program of the Pope's visit with a detailed description of the protocol. The words "Pope loves you!", which he uttered at a meeting with young people in Postojna, were a spontaneous response of enthusiasm that bypasses every protocol.
