3rd Geospatial Digital Records Preservation Conference
Registration is open.
Sustainable Access to Geospatial Records in the Digital Economy
This hybrid event, which is to take place on May 8th and 9th in the Domus Medica Conference Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with the title "Sustainable Access to Geospatial Records in the Digital Economy", is going to be an opportunity to bring together experts from various fields of work and science (such as IT, geodesy, archival science, law, history, geography, archaeology, etc.) and from many European countries, all of whom will be presenting their views on the issues of creating, protecting and using digital spatial data.
The conference supports the aim of the Digital Europe Programme to make Europe greener and more digital, which inevitably puts geospatial records at the centre of the topic. Geospatial records covering longer periods of time will be invaluable in the effort to make better forecasts faster and accept informed decisions with greater clarity, and therefore support digital users.
The international conference will be held in Slovenian and English and will be translated.
The program of the international conference is divided into six sections:
- Section 1: Importance of sustainable access to geospatial records in the digital future (geospatial role in the digital economy, AI and GeoAI applications, Green Transition initiative of EU, etc.)
- Section 2: What should we know about geospatial records (documentation requirements, metadata, interoperability aspects of sustainable access, applicable standards, best archiving)?
- Section 3: Best practices, tools and solutions for the preservation and reuse of geospatial records time series.
- Section 4: Tools and solutions for the preservation and reuse of geospatial records time series.
- Section 5: Examples of good practices, tools and solutions for storing and reusing of spatial data.
- Section 6: Lightning talks, workshop: Best solutions.
All of the submitted papers deal with subjects that the participants of the conference will undoubtedly find very interesting, however, let us here mention only a few: a contribution by the Belgian Geographical Institute, which presents the enrichment of maps with "linked data" for easier access to applications; a contribution by the Portuguese company Keep Solutions, which highlights progress in the preservation of databases with spatial data by using the SIARD archival standard; a contribution by the National Archives of the Netherlands, which presents sustainable access to geospatial data using Archiving by design; and the contribution by the Slovenian company Geoarh, which presents the implementation of the eArchiving Building Block into the Slovenian legal order, and a contribution from the Slovenian Public Archival Service, which will present a solution that supports access and use of archived geospatial data in Slovenian public archives.
The conference supports the "eArchiving Initiative" of the European Commission. The initiative provides horizontal services (i.e. specifications and tools) in the field of long-term archiving of digital records to stakeholders from across the European Union and is the result of many years of effort and activity in which all three organizers of the international conference have been actively involved. The “eArchiving Initiative” will also be presented in more detail at the conference by the representatives of the European Commission.
Since one of the goals of the conference is to enable users to understand the benefits and opportunities provided by digital services and innovations, we will close our two-day international conference with a panel discussion on the topic "Is geospatial future digital and how?". We will bring together different stakeholders – from geospatial data producers, archives, data repositories, solution providers and their users - to speak about their needs and experiences. We will try and answer the question of whether we are ready for GeoAI (i.e. the use of artificial intelligence in the evaluation and use of Geodata), and the question of what the digital future will bring for the information society.
The organizer reserves the right to change, add, adjust parts of the program or schedule.
