EU funding for cycling infrastructure along the Koroška cesta street in Maribor

  • Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy
Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, the Managing Authority for the ERDF, the ESF and the Cohesion Fund, has issued a funding decision for the project Development of cycling infrastructure along the Koroška cesta street in Maribor. The ITI-funded project, which is worth a total of EUR 330,000, will receive a contribution from the Cohesion Fund amounting to EUR 160,000.

The project is about developing a cycling connection along the Koroška cesta street in Maribor which connects a number of major traffic generating points with the downtown and will run between the junction with the Gosposvetska cesta street and the junction with the Strossmayerjeva cesta street. Apart from the newly developed cycling connection, three mini roundabouts with a fully traversable island in the middle will be constructed along with three raised crosswalks which are considered to be very effective forms of traffic calming. The area will also see traffic signalisation installed.

The project seeks to establish a connected and well-maintained cycling infrastructure between the various city districts that will provide its users with safe cycling paths and will act as an attractive alternative to private car use. The project also aims to support the design of infrastructure patterns and creation of the conditions appropriate for sustainable mobility that will help encourage voluntary change in travel behaviour among the residents of Maribor and its surroundings. These measures will also include putting a stop to the growth in the volume of travels made by cars and reducing the number of kilometres made by motorised traffic in city centres.
