Prime Minister Janša tweeted on this occasion that, on his initiative 30 years ago, the Slovenian independence Assembly adopted amendments XCVI, XCVII and XCVIII to the Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia, thereby assuming control over Slovenia's Territorial Defence. "It was one of the key steps on our path to independence facilitated by the Manoeuvre Structure of National Protection established in May 1990," the Prime Minister added.
Constitutional amendments XCVI, XCVII and XCVIII were adopted by the then Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia on the initiative of Janez Janša at a joint session of all three chambers on 27 September 1990 and promulgated on 28 September and 4 October 1990. They covered matters and obligations in relation to the then people's defence and the application of relevant regulations. Among other things, the amendments provided that the Republic of Slovenia would decide on military service, assume control over the Territorial Defence, and appoint the commander thereof.
