Ljubljana, with about 295,500 inhabitants, is acquiring a reputation as a retirement destination for both Europeans and Americans. Slovenia gained independence in 1991 and has been an EU Member State since 2004. The country has a long history of wine producing and several UNESCO World Heritage sites. Spas, casinos and resorts provide opportunities for various activities.
