Prime Minister Janez Janša: Slovenia and Croatia are fighting together for Europe to expand and become complete and free as a whole

Today, at the invitation of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Prime Minister Janez Janša and his wife, Urška Bačovnik Janša, are attending the ceremony organised by the Republic of Croatia on the occasion of their Statehood Day. On this occasion, the Prime Minister and his wife attended a concert at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.

Upon their arrival in Zagreb, Prime Minister Janša gave a statement to the press, in which he first congratulated the Republic of Croatia on their Statehood Day: "This year, both Slovenia and Croatia commemorate events and courageous steps they took to break free from the Yugoslav yoke and establish their own sovereignty and statehood," he said, continuing, "Those were times of great risk and great courage for both Slovenia and Croatia. Compared to the times in which we now live, we can see that, despite our current issues and the epidemic that we are still facing, while hoping that we are close to successfully ending this fight, such comparison largely favours the present time." "Today, both Slovenia and Croatia are NATO and European Union members and are fighting and striving together for Europe to expand and become complete and free as a whole," he added.

"If 30 years ago we were at the beginning of a new path, we are now, after those 30 years, in the middle of our journey, where issues indeed remain, but the times are much more optimistic, and today we stand together as EU and NATO members who can help others in joining this space of freedom, a space of which merely 30 years ago we could only dream," he said.

The Slovenian prime minister concluded by once again thanking his Croatian counterpart for the invitation and, in turn, inviting him to the Slovenian Statehood Day ceremony on 25 June, when Slovenia will also assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time in its history. "We are counting on good cooperation during that time," said the Slovenian prime minister, who concluded by congratulating Croatia on their well-executed Presidency of the Council of the EU during the very difficult time of the epidemic, when there was no light yet to be seen at the end of the tunnel, no vaccine and many things in Europe needing to be organised anew.
