State Secretary Raščan assured Ambassador Zlauvinen of his continued support for Slovenia’s efforts for the successful conduct of the Review Conference. “As the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, Slovenia is working to ensure that member states contribute constructively to the further strengthening and implementation of the Treaty, which is the cornerstone of the global non-proliferative and disarmament regime, at the upcoming meeting of the Review Conference,” stressed State Secretary Raščan.

State Secretary Raščan and the Ambassador Zlauvinen agreed on the importance of balanced progress on all three main pillars of the Treaty. State Secretary Raščan said that Slovenia, as one of the 32 countries in the world with a comprehensive civilian nuclear programme, would particularly strive to increase the visibility and awareness of the importance of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, also in the light of Slovenia’s contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ambassador Zlauvinen congratulated the Slovenian side on its recent election to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the period 2021–2023. With this election, Slovenia will continue to actively support the strengthening of the Agency’s contribution to international peace and security.

State Secretary Raščan also stressed that progressive nuclear disarmament is the most realistic approach to the implementation of Article VI of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. He also confirmed that Slovenia would press on with promoting the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
