Thirteen Slovenian Films Finally Home Again
At the time of the signing of the deposit contract, Slovenia did not have a suitable repository for the storage of films shot on highly flammable nitrate film tape. The films in question are original film materials and are considered to be Slovenian film classics (among them is also the first ever Slovenian feature film Na svoji zemlji) made by some of the legendary Slovenian film directors:
- France Štiglic: Na svoji zemlji (1948), Trst (1951), Svet na kajžarju (1952), Balada o trobenti in oblaku (1961);
- Jože Gale: Kekec (1951);
- Bojan Stupica: Jara gospoda (1953);
- France Kosmač: Dobri stari pianino (1959), Ti loviš (1961);
- Mirko Grobler: Dobro morje (1958);
- Jože Babič: Tri četrtine sonca (1959), Veselica (1960);
- Janez Kavčič: Akcija (1960);
- František Čap: Naš avto (1962).
On November 26, 2021, having received consensus of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia and the Yugoslav Cinematheque signed a contract on compensation for the storage and preservation of the thirteen films. Such compensation for the storage since 1991 was paid and the films could finally be transferred back to Slovenia. For cooperation and support in concluding and implementing this important agreement we wish to express our sincere thanks to the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to the Slovenian Embassy in Belgrade.
The returned films constitute a very important piece of Slovenian cultural and film heritage. The conclusion of the contract between the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia and the Yugoslav Cinematheque was commemorated by a symbolic handing over of the films at the start of the film event Days of Slovenian Film that took place at the Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade on December 8, 2021. This invaluable film treasure finally arrived home – to the Slovenian Film Archives at the Archives of RS, on Friday, December 10, 2021, at 1 pm.
