State Secretary Dovžan at the European Humanitarian Forum
- Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In his address, the State Secretary expressed his concern that, at the present time, we are still witnessing an escalation of conflicts, serious violations of humanitarian principles and human rights, and attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure. The protection of civilians, in particular the most vulnerable groups, as well as humanitarian and health care workers, is a cornerstone of international humanitarian law. He stressed that violations of international humanitarian law should not be allowed to go unpunished and went on to express support for the work of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry to investigate alleged violations of international humanitarian law and human rights during the war in Ukraine. It is also imperative that countries strive tirelessly to bring violations to the attention of international organisations.
State Secretary Dovžan commended the European Union’s rapid, determined and united humanitarian response to the humanitarian tragedy in Ukraine as a result of the aggression of the Russian Federation. Despite providing further assistance to Ukraine, we as donors must not forget other humanitarian crises around the world.
Organised by the European Commission and the French Presidency of the Council of the EU, the European Humanitarian Forum is being held from 21 to 23 March 2022. This is the first event of its kind, bringing together high-level representatives of states, humanitarian partners and other individuals, with a view to holding an effective dialogue on current humanitarian challenges.
