Certain other countries and institutions around the world also joined the project. Its objective, which is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, was to plant as many honey plants as possible in Slovenia and elsewhere in the world.

The Slovenian beekeepers’ initiative is to plant two million honey plants in Slovenia by 2030. As said by Minister Podgoršek, who attended the planting at the seat of the Slovenian Beekeepers’ Association, this act was a small step for us, but a great one for bees and pollinators. "With this, we are helping the planet, the biodiversity, bees and other pollinators. If we help them, we will have food. I am very pleased that the support for this project was also ensured from public funds." Together with the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food financed the supply and delivery of 10,000 native honey tree and shrub seedlings through the Climate Fund.

The day of planting honey plants is an initiative for the entire world to join in, as honey trees must be planted throughout the world to preserve the environment and pollinators and maintain their survival, which ensures pollination for the production of 70 per cent of our food. This is the first specific project in the EU to add to the EU objectives to plant three billion trees by 2030 and it will greatly contribute to the planned sinks of greenhouse gases in the EU and the climate neutrality of Europe. The project also highlights the preservation of a clean and healthy environment, which is crucial, as even the slightest change in our planet’s ecosystems is felt substantially by our bees and other pollinators.

Beekeeping receives a lot of attention in Slovenia. The world of plants is very rich and offers a vast variety of various plants which help us take care of bees and improve bee pasture. Ornamental plants are useful, too. Bees and pollinators will also be at the centre of attention on 20 May, when we will celebrate the 5th World Bee Day. The main topic of this year’s celebration will be young people in beekeeping.
