Fifth World Bee Day is celebrated on 20 May
The main theme of this year’s celebration is young people and beekeeping. As the initiator of the declaration of World Bee Day, Slovenia wishes to focus on young people in the European Year of Youth, as they will be the guardians of the planet and will also encounter ever increasing challenges in the fields of food security and environmental protection. They should thus be aware of the significance of pollinators and their protection and learn the skills of beekeeping that are passed on from one generation to the next. Knowledge transfer is exceptionally important for the future of beekeeping, which also enables new, so-called green jobs, new opportunities for beekeeping families and farms for the development of apitourism, development of products with added value, etc.
Numerous events are about to take place in Slovenia and around the world. The largest event in Slovenia will be organised by the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association in Dolenjske Toplice, the 19th Beekeeping Festival, which will also be attended by last year’s recipient of the Golden Bee Award, Prof. Dr. Lucas Alejandro Garibaldi from Argentina.
The main international event will be held by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). The virtual event will focus on the accelerated decline in pollinator diversity.
In addition to the above events, the second Golden Bee Award will be presented on Friday. This is the highest award of the Republic of Slovenia for exceptional achievements in the field of protecting bees and other pollinators and raising awareness concerning the significance of their role for humankind and the planet.
Other activities and events are also organised by the diplomatic and consular representations of the Republic of Slovenia abroad, which serve as the main points for dissemination of information and promotion of pollinator significance among the worldwide public.
