Prime Minister Janez Janša attends a special European Council meeting

EU leaders are expected to discuss the continued support provided to Ukraine by the EU, in particular humanitarian aid and financial, material and political support. The European Council will also discuss EU security and defence after Russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as how to strengthen resilience and increase its capacity through investments. In their discussions, the EU leaders will also take into consideration the analysis of the defence investment gap conducted by the European Commission in cooperation with the European Defence Agency and the Commission's proposal to strengthen the technological and industrial base of the EU's defence.
At the meeting, EU leaders will further review the progress towards a gradual reduction of the EU's dependence on imported fossil fuels from Russia. In this context, a debate on the RePowerEU plan presented by the European Commission on 18 May 2022 is foreseen.
The European Council will also touch on food security, including international coordination, and discuss how to ensure a comprehensive global approach.
EU leaders began today's meeting with an exchange of views with the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.
