12 thousand children attend workshops on safe internet use

  • Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Digital Transformation
At the end of October, the Government Office for Digital Transformation started implementing three projects intended to raise the level of digital competences among the young and older generations. The projects implemented together with partner organisations focused on primary and secondary school students and older residents of rural areas of Slovenia.

"Safety on the Internet" workshops for primary school children

In cooperation with the YUNO elementary school portal, the Government Office for Digital Transformation organised five free Safety on the Internet interactive workshops for elementary school students during the autumn holidays. These include online etiquette, use of social networks, cyberbullying and identifying false information. Each workshop features a recorded video explanation with a prepared template, a summary and an interactive quiz to check and consolidate the acquired knowledge. Anonymous questionnaires are also available to participants to check whether their screen time and use of social networks is excessive and to identify fake news more easily. The latter is used to follow the issue by means of a methodology unified at the EU level.

Every day a new workshop is featured on yuno.si, and the number of visitors increases every day. So far, the workshops reached the highest number of views on Wednesday (4,500), and there were a total of 12,000 views in the first three days. We are happy that we can educate the youngest generations about this exceptionally important topic and empower them as they enter the digital world with knowledge about the advantages, pitfalls and, in general, behaviour and communication in the online environment.

The workshops are a copyrighted work prepared by experts in the field and YUNO pedagogues. As with all the materials of the YUNO - your school portal, these are also up-to-date regarding the education of children, demonstrating a deep insight into the needs of children with special needs (including the autism spectrum, attention deficit and dyslexia). The material is presented clearly and in a language that elementary school students understand, thereby empowering them in independent work.

"In three days, we reached 12,000 views for the internet safety workshops for elementary school students. We hoped to help as many children and young people as possible to know how to protect themselves online. The interest exceeded all our expectations. You have shown interest, and we will make sure that many projects for a safe, effective and inclusive digital transformation continue to be implemented in the future," the Minister for Digital Transformation, Emilija Stojmenova Duh, said today.

"Although the project was implemented during the autumn holidays, we are exceptionally positively surprised by the response. When we started preparing workshops in accordance with the YUNO teaching method, we knew that these had added value. We are pleased that our workshops on internet safety have been recognised as a credible source of educational content by the Government Office for Digital Transformation, as well as by parents and student. The large attendance, including during the holidays, confirms the already known fact that this type of content has so far not been freely available in this form, i.e. available for use in classrooms without costs or external contractors, and that it is very desirable. It is exceptionally important to know how to use the internet safely, but there is a shortage of educational material in schools. We would like to continue with the project in cooperation with the Government Office for Digital Transformation and enter the classrooms of schools with an expanded offering and take the project beyond the borders." Adriana Yuno, director of YUNO – your school.

"How to Master the Language of TikTok" workshops for secondary school students

"How to Master the Language of TikTok" workshops for secondary school students are taking place during the autumn holidays. Participants learn how to use TikTok to communicate original content selected by the secondary school students themselves. They also acquire the skills necessary to create quality content for TikTok, which serves as a platform for sharing good ideas and building digital communities. The one-hour workshops are held via the Zoom platform. Secondary school students learn how to communicate on a variety of topics, learn advanced editing and ways to build a TikTok community. Lecturers also provide advice on how to be funny and how not to be offensive, how to recognise fake news and how to take an idea from inspiration to execution.

Mobile Heroes in cooperation with the social enterprise Simbioza

The Government Office for Digital Transformation started implementing the Mobile Heroes project together with the social enterprise Simbioza on 25 October. As part of the project, the mobile unit of the social enterprise Simbioza provides older residents in rural areas with training and strengthens their basic digital competences for the (safe and independent) use of information and communication technologies. Individual support in the field is of great help for older people in learning about and using digital tools safely. In the first week, the travelling classroom visited five locations (Tržišče, Brestanica, Jesenice, Medvode and Pirniče), and 70 individuals have participated in the workshops so far.
