It will be in charge of preparing opinions, proposals and expert guidance for the overhaul of the healthcare system, addressing issues such as access to healthcare at different levels, the financing of healthcare services, quality and safety of treatment, digitalisation of healthcare and other issues.

After the first meeting of the Strategic Health Council, the Prime Minister, Dr Robert Golob, underlined that the Council brings together experts with different perspectives on the same challenges: "We did not look for experts who would agree in advance on solutions." He also explained that the health reform would be based on the Slovenian model and that good practices from abroad would be used to help shape it.

The Chair of the Strategic Health Council, Dr Erik Brecelj, said that the composition of the Council was well-thought-out: "The experts come from different fields, they look at the issues from a broad perspective, and I sensed that there is a strong desire to find solutions. The meetings will take place once a week and I am optimistic that after 30 years we will move things forward."

At the meeting, the Minister of Health, Danijel Bešič Loredan, presented an overview of the state of healthcare in Slovenia, and the members agreed on the need for a comprehensive and well-thought-out approach to the overhaul of the healthcare system. They decided to discuss proposals to improve access to primary healthcare at the next meeting, while also pursuing activities in other operational areas.

Proposals will be developed in cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders and coordinated between sectors and disciplines. Council members will also be able to invite external experts with specific knowledge and competences in different fields to participate and contribute to the debate.
