The countdown to a historic sporting event for Slovenia

From 21 February to 5 March, Planica will be the centre of winter sport and the venue for the biggest sporting event in the history of the Republic of Slovenia, the Planica 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Nordic skiers will compete for titles in ski jumping, cross-country skiing and combined skiing in the valley in the shadow of the Ponce mountain chain. The organisers promise an unprecedented sporting spectacle.

To date, 64 countries have registered to qualify for the world championships in Planica. More than 2000 athletes and their teams plus more than 2000 media representatives are expected to attend the competition. Planica, Kranjska Gora and Slovenia will be showcased to more than 500 million TV viewers around the world via the live coverage of the Nordic World Ski Championships. Organisers expect up to 200,000 spectators in Planica over the two weeks, with many of these cheering on the 33 Slovenian athletes who will be competing there. With high-level visits of state representatives planned to take place, Planica will also be a diplomatic and political event, and serve as a platform for networking and business.

Sustainability is a major focus of the event’s organisation. The aim is to create an event with almost zero waste and the lowest possible carbon footprint. To this end, the organisers have developed very detailed sustainability standards, which will form the basis for national guidelines for outdoor sustainable sport events in the future.

More than 1300 workers will be involved in the organisation of the championships, which has a budget of close to €16 million. The championships will be accompanied by four additional events: the Sporto sports marketing and sponsorship conference, a management conference, a sustainability conference in cooperation with the NGO Umanotera and an economic conference with the public agency Spirit. The sporting events will be rounded off by a rich accompanying programme.
