Prime Minister Golob delivers message to athletes at the ceremonial opening of Planica 2023

Prime Minister Robert Golob attended the ceremonial opening of the biggest sporting event in Slovenia’s history – the Nordic World Ski Championships Planica 2023. More than 2,000 athletes and members of support teams from 66 countries are due to take part.

The Prime Minister welcomed to Slovenia the athletes who will compete for 24 sets of medals and emphasised the uniqueness of the atmosphere in Planica: "May the world remember Planica for its fantastic atmosphere. Planica is our pride."

He added that we Slovenians are a sporting nation. This is confirmed not only by the many successes of our top athletes, but also all by the full school playgrounds and sports halls all over the country, by the mountain huts and lodges brimming with visitors, and by the numerous forest footpaths and cycle tracks.

At the end of the welcome greeting, the Prime Minister delivered a special message to the competitors, 33 of whom will represent Slovenian colours:

"When you wake up in the morning, look out of the window. Just as the mountains stand tall in their invincibility, just as a stream always finds its way through the hardest rock and just as a ray of sunshine seeps through the smallest crevice, so you will find inspiration in this beautiful nature and prove to yourself that you are capable of so much more than you ever imagined. Let the championships begin!”
