The biggest sports event in the history of Slovenia
The 43rd Nordic World Ski Championship will take place in Planica until 5 March, with more than 2000 athletes competing for world champion titles in ski jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined.
Today, the events will focus on Kranjska Gora. The official opening of the World Championship will take place there and more than 130 performers will take part in the event that will be not only a sporting, but also a musical, spectacle.
Among the musical performers will be Laibach, the Sašo Avsenik Ensemble and DJ Umek. There will also be a flag-bearers' parade of all 65 participating national teams.
The timing of Tuesday's official beginning of the first major event at the World Championship was chosen deliberately as it symbolises the year 2023. The following day, the competitions will also start with the qualifying rounds for the first cross-country events, followed in the evening by the qualifying round for the first ski jumping event, the women's individual on the medium hill.
During the official part, athletes and fans will be addressed by Johan Eliasch, President of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, Robert Golob, Prime Minister, and Enzo Smrekar, President of the Slovenian Ski Federation and Olympic Committee Planica.
