Minister Jevšek keynote speaker on the Day of the Unification of Prekmurje Slovenians with the Mother Nation
“In the past, we faced many difficult challenges. But we didn’t give into fate, we bravely stood together! That is why we have persevered as a nation and why we live in an independent country today! Even in these days when we face the consequences of the catastrophic floods that hit a good part of Slovenia earlier this month, we are not discouraged. We are mindful of our fellow humans, have a sense of solidarity and show strength during the most difficult moments.”
In his address, the Minister also spoke about the recent catastrophic floods and how the Slovenian nation stands united in the most challenging situations. This was demonstrated once again by the thousands of volunteers, the immediate assistance in the form of donating food and other necessities as well as the financial resources raised for those affected. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to rebuild the most affected areas. /.../ We are not alone. European Union representatives have assured us that EU funding will be available to us for reconstruction.”
The Minister also pointed out that the Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has been taking steps since the first day after the floods to prepare the application for assistance from the EU Solidarity Fund. We are looking into the possibility of reallocating Cohesion Policy funds, available to Slovenia under the 2014-2020 period. Part of the funding, available to Slovenia under the 2021-2027 programming period, may also be available.
“So funds are available. /.../ It is not a question of whether we will be able to get the EU funds that are available to us. Just as it is not a question of whether we will be able to recover from the damage caused by the floods. The answer is: We will, together we will succeed!”
The Minister concluded by saying that he was convinced that the people of Prekmurje had opened their hearts and done their utmost to help those affected by the floods, not only in Prekmurje, but in all parts of Slovenia affected by the natural disaster.
“The people of Prekmurje have a big and open heart just like the wide and open plains of Prekmurje. /.../ Dear inhabitants of Prekmurje, on the occasion of tomorrow’s holiday, I say: Rejoice, good people of Slovenia!”
