Minister Fajon: "We will strengthen the Slovenian-German strategic partnership"
Ministers Fajon and Baerbock reviewed the implementation of the Slovenian-German strategic partnership, which was signed during Minister Fajon’s visit to Berlin in July 2022. They agreed to strengthen cooperation in the automotive and aerospace industries; to support Slovenia's membership of the European Space Agency; to commit to the Ljubljana-The Hague Convention; to cooperate on Slovenia's priority issues in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), such as climate security, with a focus on gender equality in conflicts and the fight against disinformation; to cooperate as partners in the Global Diplomacy Lab; and to promote cooperation between the two diplomatic academies and mutual assistance in the event of major natural disasters.
In this context, the two ministers paid special attention to EU enlargement, which is in the strategic interest of Slovenia, Germany and the EU. "My colleague Baerbock and I have agreed that Slovenia and Germany will jointly promote a non-paper on a more efficient enlargement process, proposing technical changes to the enlargement methodology to allow for qualified majority voting, and we will continue to work closely together in the Western Balkans," said Minister Fajon, adding: "I hope that by the end of the year the EU summit will send important signals about EU enlargement to the Western Balkans”. The two ministers will continue their discussion on the future of the EU in the afternoon at a round table entitled "EurUp for the challenge? EU enlargement and reform in times of global crises" at the Rog Centre.
"The first step is to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and convene an international peace conference that would provide security and lead to the recognition of Palestine. That is why we support all initiatives for a two-state solution and peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians," said Minister Fajon, commenting on the situation in the Middle East. "I deplore the Israeli government's announcement of financial support for the construction of more Jewish settlements. The plan to demolish certain Palestinian buildings, including those funded by EU Member States or the EU, is unacceptable. The expansion of Jewish settlements and the demolition of humanitarian infrastructure provided by international donors will not guarantee Israel's security or contribute to the destruction of Hamas," she added, stressing that "the most serious international crimes, including the crime of aggression, must not go unpunished. In this context, I would like to thank Germany for its support in the process of adopting the Ljubljana-The Hague Convention, which fills a gap in international law and justice”.
Ministers Fajon and Baerbock also discussed the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) and Slovenia's membership of the UN Security Council. "Slovenia will work closely with its foreign policy partner Germany and pursue possible joint activities in areas such as women, peace and security, feminist foreign policy, climate, peace and security, and water diplomacy," said Minister Fajon.
The two officials visited the Roje National Logistics Centre, where they were shown the flood protection equipment and briefed on the operation of the Slovenian High Capacity Pumping Unit, which is also part of the EU Civil Protection Pool.
They visited the #RescEU Capacity Store, which stocks personal protective equipment for use in the event of serious cross-border health threats. The Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief expressed Slovenia’s gratitude to Germany for its selfless assistance after the floods by presenting the German Minister with a commemorative photo.
