Border controls extended until 21 December, then for another six months
The temporary border controls at the internal borders with Croatia and Hungary, which Slovenia reintroduced on 21 October 2023, have been extended until 21 December 2023. This is the maximum period provided for in Article 28 of the Schengen Borders Code. As of 22 December 2023, the measure of temporary reintroduction of internal border controls is to be extended by another six months pursuant to Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code.
At its meeting of 7 December 2023, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia issued an ordinance amending the Ordinance temporarily reintroducing controls at the internal borders of the Republic of Slovenia with the Republic of Croatia and Hungary.
The measure of temporary controls at the internal borders was introduced after a threat to internal security had been perceived and followed by a terrorism threat assessment. The terrorism threat level in Slovenia was raised from level 2 to level 3 on a five-point scale on 19 October 2023 and remains elevated. Threat levels for terrorism have also been raised in some of our neighbouring countries, even to the highest level in Italy and Austria.
Taking into account the principle of proportionality, the modalities and intensity of the temporary border control measures at internal borders will continue to be targeted and focused on the prevention of terrorism, extremism and cross-border crime. The measures will be carried out in a way that minimises the impact on travellers, the environment and the economy, and in particular on the lives of the people living near the border. The Slovenian police will also keep carrying out joint activities with the police forces of the neighbouring countries (e.g. joint patrols, joint controls, information exchange, regular consultations, etc.).
