State Secretary Štucin with his Hungarian counterpart on current European issues and EU enlargement

State Secretary Marko Štucin hosted the Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs, Dr János Bóka. They discussed current European issues, with a particular focus on Hungary's preparations for the EU Council Presidency in the second half of 2024 and EU enlargement.

They talked about the future prospects for EU enlargement and the current situation in the Western Balkans. Slovenia and Hungary support a credible EU enlargement perspective and recall the importance of a united EU response to ensure stability and development in the region. State Secretary Štucin and Minister Bóka also discussed the events that Hungary intends to organise during its EU Council Presidency.

Minister for European Union Affairs Bóka presented the Hungarian Presidency programme to State Secretary Štucin, outlining the priorities in each area. He mentioned competitiveness of the EU economy as one of the main priorities of the Hungarian Presidency, also in the light of demographic challenges. In this context, particular attention was devoted to strengthening the EU's long-term competitiveness, which must be based on the development of the internal market, adequate investment in research and innovation, fair competition and participation in the global economy. As the incoming EU Council Presidency, Hungary will also focus on EU enlargement and the Western Balkans.
