Overconsumption of unhealthy foods, sugar and alcoholic beverages has a long-term negative impact on our health. Regular consumption of sugary drinks can lead to excessive body weight and obesity, which increases the risk of developing a number of diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

The two Strategic Councils underlined the need for a comprehensive approach to food and alcohol policies that will have a positive impact on the population’s health. In this context, they propose that the relevant sectors develop a set of measures to promote healthy lifestyles, including the introduction of progressive taxation on drinks with added sugar and sweeteners, and on energy drinks.

In addition, the Strategic Councils recommend the development of a comprehensive alcohol policy as a basis for taking further steps in health care. They also support and encourage the Ministry of Health to launch a campaign to raise awareness regarding the negative health effects of tobacco and alcohol use.
