The President awarded contributers to Slovenia's entry into the EU and NATO

At a ceremony held at the presidential palace, President Nataša Pirc Musar marked the 20th anniversary of Slovenia's membership in the EU and NATO by awarding the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and e Negotiating Team for Accession of Slovenia to the EU with the Golden Order of Merit. This recognition was given for their significant contributions to achieving these key foreign policy objectives.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was tasked with integrating Slovenia into European and regional structures. According to the award citation, the Government Office for European Affairs played a crucial role in this effort by providing excellent support to the Negotiating Team for Accession during EU membership negotiations. The office ensured Slovenia's legislation was aligned with EU laws and, following accession, facilitated Slovenia's successful functioning as a full member state within the ministry.

The Negotiating Team for Slovenia's accession to the EU worked in close coordination with the Government Office for European Affairs. The citation highlighted that this team was the central and most important national group, shaping Slovenia's positions in negotiations, which were then presented in the relevant European institutional processes. The team established an effective system of collaboration among various partners in Slovenia, enabling quick responsiveness, transparency, and the inclusion of all participants in the negotiations.

"Through your lives, work, dedication, and commitment, you all have significantly shaped the development and prosperity of all of us," President Pirc Musar commended the award recipients. "The state decoration awarded today is a token of our sincere gratitude, respect, and recognition for your contribution to the progress and welfare of our country and society. Excellence is a voice that an individual has and uses for broader social benefit, not just for themselves. Plato said that we measure a person by what they do with their abilities. I add that work done well and diligently gives us new strength and inspires others. This applies to all of you," she concluded in her ceremonial speech.

Upon gaining independence, the Republic of Slovenia set two key foreign policy goals: to become part of the European Union and the NATO alliance. Many dedicated individuals and institutions contributed to achieving these goals. On the 20th anniversary of their successful realization, the nation and its people express gratitude and respect for the excellent work done and the statesmanlike stance maintained. On the eve of Europe Day, celebrating our diverse family and broader homeland, they received the decorations of the Republic of Slovenia.
