International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide

Today marks the 29th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica. In May this year, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 11 July as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide. On this day, we remember the victims, the missing, their families and all those who have been permanently scarred by the genocide.

The genocide, in which at least 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were killed between 11 and 22 July 1995, is a fact recognised by international tribunals. The remembrance of the genocide victims is intended to raise awareness and prevent atrocities, especially in light of the principle of the responsibility to protect the population from mass atrocities, a principle which Slovenia has actively helped create and implement for nearly 20 years.

Differing interpretations of historical facts, denial of genocide and glorification of war criminals complicate the reconciliation process in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.

Slovenia supports reconciliation between all the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not least for the sake of the new generations who are not responsible for the actions of convicted criminals. The International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide is an important step towards reconciliation and the achievement of peace, trust and mutual respect. This is the very basis of coexistence for the future of all, especially the younger generations," said Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Tanja Fajon on the occasion of the International Day.
