Slovenia welcomes the Advisory opinion issued by ICJ on Legal Consequences arising from the Policies and Practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem

In its Advisory opinion the International Court of Justice (ICJ) held that Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory breach some of the most elementary rules and principles of international law, including the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful.

ICJ further pointed out that Israel must bring to an end this unlawful presence as quickly as possible, must cease immediately all settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and must make reparation for the damages caused to natural and legal persons in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The Court recalled that all States and international organization are obliged not to recognize as legal the situation created by the illegal presence of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and not to render help or assistance for maintaining this illegal situation.

The Advisory opinion by the principle judicial organ of the United Nations is an authoritative judicial decision that carries great legal weight and moral authority. Slovenia calls on Israel to comply with its duties and obligations under international law as set out in the advisory opinion and upon all United Nations Member States to take active steps in order to give full effect to the interpretation of international law as laid down by the Court.
