Prime Minister Golob welcomes the adoption of the Pact for the Future
Upon the adoption of this historic document, Prime Minister Golob said, “A great start to our visit to the UN. The Pact for the Future has been adopted. It is an action-oriented document focusing on sustainable development, international resource and security, young people, science and technology, which are the core priorities of the international community.”
In his speech, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the adoption of historic documents that will usher in a shift towards a more effective, inclusive and connected multilateralism. He said that "he will strive for its implementation until his last day in office.” He called on UN member states to do so as well, as the Pact places the emphasis on dialogue and negotiations leading to the end of wars. Secretary-General Guterres also called for reform of the composition and working methods of the UN Security Council.
On the Summit’s sidelines, Prime Minister Golob today met with the President of the International Red Cross Committee, Mrs. Mirjana Spoljarić Egger, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Thomas Bach.
The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Golob for Slovenia's contribution to the UN Security Council. He particularly highlighted the topic of the central session of Slovenia’s presidency of the UN Security Council entitled "Leadership for Peace", which, according to him, can contribute to a world without double standards. The two touched on the Pact for the Future, which also emphasises the importance of sports in the Declaration on Future Generations. They agreed that the refugee Olympic Team could serve as an excellent example of good practice in other areas, not just sports. They concluded their talks in the Olympic spirit, emphasising that solidarity is the foundation of Olympism.
Prime Minister Golob also met with the President of the International Red Cross Committee (ICRC), Mrs. Mirjana Spoljarić Egger. In their second meeting this year, she acquainted Prime Minister Golob with the key problems faced by the ICRC in major crisis situations in the world, especially in Gaza, Ukraine, Myanmar and the Sudan. The Prime Minister reiterated his strong and unequivocal support for the organisation’s activities. He called for cooperation on formulating concrete measures to promote and respect international humanitarian law.
