Štucin at informal videoconference of EU Foreign Ministers on Lebanon
The State Secretary strongly condemned the violence, which is further destabilising the region and claiming civilian lives. He called for active EU engagement and, given the situation on the ground, urged restraint in the face of a potential ground invasion. He condemned all forms of terrorism, emphasising that the fight against it does not justify civilian casualties. State Secretary Štucin also expressed support for the Lebanese army and UNIFIL, stressing the need to protect their personnel. He voiced concern about the humanitarian crisis, particularly in southern Lebanon, where civilians on both sides are suffering. Slovenia supports the EU's additional humanitarian aid worth 10 million euros and is currently assessing the situation on the ground to allocate further assistance.
Diplomatic solutions are the only viable path forward. Slovenia supports all efforts, including the French and US proposals, for a temporary ceasefire. The State Secretary highlighted last week’s emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. In conclusion, he stressed that Gaza must not be overlooked, as it urgently needs humanitarian aid, a ceasefire and the realisation of a two-state solution.
