The UN General Assembly Third Committee on Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs, which deals with human rights issues, is meeting in New York from 3 October 2024. Slovenia has traditionally focused its work on its priorities, such as the rights of women, the elderly and children, human rights and the environment, and the situation of human rights worldwide.

Slovenia is also actively involved in other issues under discussion. Together with a group of partner countries, it is tabling a resolution on strengthening the human rights treaty body system. Slovenia has already spoken in the general debate on social development, where the Slovenian youth delegate to the UN made a statement drawing attention to the situation of young people and the importance of education and participation in decision-making.

The Slovenian delegation also made statements in interactive dialogues with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Representatives of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict and for Violence against Children, the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, the Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders and the Special Rapporteur on the human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. The delegation will also participate in an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on minority issues and the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as on the situation of human rights in Myanmar and Afghanistan.

The Third Committee addresses human rights issues primarily through general debate and interactive dialogues with special rapporteurs, independent experts, treaty body chairpersons and special representatives of the UN system. Each year, the General Assembly also takes note of the annual report of the President of the UN Human Rights Council. Among the topics to be addressed by the Committee, issues related to the protection and promotion of the rights of the child, women's rights, racism, the abolition of the death penalty and religious intolerance are expected to be more difficult to discuss. A challenging debate is also expected in the context of the consideration of the human rights situation in individual countries.
