Slovenia reaches major milestone in renewable energy use in 2023
According to the Statistical Office, Slovenia last year exceeded its 2020 target of a 25% renewable energy share, as set out in the EU Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. For the first time, Slovenia will not incur a surcharge for meeting its renewable energy target through the statistical transfer mechanism.
Last year, the share of renewable energy in Slovenia's gross final energy consumption reached 25.07%, marking the first time the country achieved a quarter share of renewable energy without additional purchases.
The most notable growth was in the electricity sector, where the share of renewable energy increased by 4.88 percentage points over the previous year, reaching 41.89%, largely due to a surge in solar power generation. In the transport sector, the renewable energy share rose by 2.19 percentage points, now standing at 10.02%. Meanwhile, the heating and cooling sector saw a modest increase of 0.31 percentage points, bringing the annual share of renewable energy consumption to 34.3%.
