November 20 – Day of Public Libraries

Librarians first celebrated the Day of Public Libraries in 2002. Each year, it is accompanied by Public Library Week, which this year is being celebrated in libraries from November 18 to 22. The slogan for this year's celebration is "(Let's) Gather in the Library."

Through numerous events across Slovenia, librarians highlight the crucial role of libraries in developing reading skills, literacy, creativity, the use of modern technologies, and acquiring additional knowledge about current societal topics. The Day of Slovenian Public Libraries is also an annual opportunity for librarians and libraries to present themselves to the public, while users share their perceptions and experiences.

This year's Public Library Week celebration emphasizes the Ljubljana Manifesto, which calls for reflection on the role of reading on a higher level in the digital age. In today's world, filled with information and distractions, the slogan aims to draw attention to the importance of deep reading and focus in the library. The slogan symbolizes the multifaceted mission of libraries – as spaces for reading, gathering, and fostering concentration. Librarians stress that libraries are not just homes for books but also social hubs where people connect and strengthen community ties.
