A new gym opens at Ljubljana’s Gimnazija Šiška, general upper secondary school, with the help of EU funding

The Minister of Education, Vinko Logaj, attends the grand opening of a new gym at Gimnazija Šiška, general upper secondary school, in Ljubljana.

Gimnazija Šiška offers two educational programmes: the general upper secondary educational programme and sports department programme. This year's enrolment at the school is 585 students.

The new gym provides the so far missing space needed for implementing the educational programme of a sports secondary school and includes two training areas with associated sports equipment and accompanying rooms (locker rooms, toilets). A highly energy-efficient building also provides access to vulnerable groups.

The Ministry of Education contributed slightly more than EUR 2 million received from EU funds as part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

On this occasion, the Minister thanked everyone who promotes sports activities among young people and commended them for their dedicated work.

“Creating conditions for a healthy lifestyle and high-quality engagement in sports among young people is one of the most important tasks of the government and anyone who are in any way connected with education of and work with young people. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the principal and the faculty for having supported young people at Gimnazija Šiška for many years, standing by their side in numerous challenges, celebrating their achievements, and enabling them to develop their sports careers. Teachers are the heart and soul of every school. In addition to imparting knowledge, the importance lies on education, inspiration, and providing support. I would like to emphasise the breadth and depth of the teaching profession, in which effects are not measured by standards, but by student’s educational achievements. This is the charm of the teaching profession," added the Minister.

The opening ceremony also included a dance programme performed by current and former students at the school who have achieved remarkable sports results at home and abroad.
