Holocaust Remembrance Day: working to prevent atrocities from happening again
The report outlines Slovenia’s activities in line with IHRA’s vision: ‘A world that remembers the Holocaust. A world without genocide.’ On 27 January—Holocaust Remembrance Day—various events are taking place across Slovenia, most of them under the auspices of the national project Shoah – Let Us Remember, coordinated by the Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor. A full list of Shoah – Let Us Remember events in Slovenia for 2025 is available at the events link.
To mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, schools across Slovenia are also organising a range of activities. Eighty years after this unspeakable human tragedy, these initiatives remain crucial in raising awareness and preventing processes that could lead to new horrors.
Between 1.1 and 1.5 million people of 25 different nationalities were murdered at Auschwitz, the vast majority of them Jews. Among those imprisoned were 2,324 Slovenians, of whom 1,331 never returned home. A total of 58,522 Slovenians were deported to concentration camps, and approximately 12,000 perished.
This day is not only about remembering mass atrocities but also about active engagement and strong warnings that such genocide must never happen again. Upholding the promise of ‘Never Again’ is not just about protecting the weak and vulnerable—it is the foundation of a democratic society and the safeguarding of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs underscores the importance of this awareness, both in Slovenia and globally, through its engagement in the international community.
