Minister Fajon starts her tour of the Middle East with a visit to Jordan
They focused on the positive shifts in the region and on the evaluation of the situation following the ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and the historic turn of events in Syria. “Today, Jordan has once again expressed its gratitude to Slovenia for all its brave steps, including the recognition of Palestine and its stance in the UN Security Council. We agree that the forceful displacement of Palestinians and the illegal annexation of the West Bank are inadmissible. Slovenia hopes that the temporary ceasefire agreement and the exchange of hostages and prisoners will lead to a permanent ceasefire and peace in the Middle East. I thanked Minister Safadi for his valuable assistance in the delivery of Slovenian humanitarian aid to Gaza, for his firm support and for hosting the UNRWA headquarters,” said Minister Fajon at the end of the visit.
Slovenia and Jordan have traditionally enjoyed friendly relations, which have been strengthened in recent years. As like-minded countries, we also collaborate within the UN. Water management has the potential to deepen our collaboration, as water supply is a major challenge for Jordan, while Slovenia has a lot of experience to share on the topic. Trade between the two countries is growing. Other opportunities for collaboration lie in the pharmaceutical industry, renewables, high technology, AI and tourism.
At the end of their meeting, Ministers Fajon and Safadi signed the agreement on the abolition of visas for Slovenian holders of diplomatic and service passports. Minister Fajon expressed her hope that this step will lead to the abolition of visas for all Slovenian citizens.
Tomorrow, Minister Fajon will continue her visit to Amman, where she will be received in audience by the King of Jordan. She will visit the refugee centre and meet with Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini at the UNRWA headquarters.
