Slovenia to deploy an expert to Myanmar as part of the EU Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team
The deployment is foreseen for a period of 14 to 21 days, with the possibility of renewal and rotation of experts, starting on 1 April 2025.
The Republic of the Union of Myanmar was struck by a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on Friday 28 March 2025. The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System estimates that 7.3 million people felt the very strong shaking (MMI VII or more), 4.5 million of them MMI VIII. According to the United Nations, more than 1,700 people have died, more than 3,400 are injured and more than 300 are missing. It is estimated that the numbers will continue to rise. Critical infrastructure has been severely damaged and many connections have been cut.
On Sunday 30 March 2025, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs requested the European Union to assist with search and rescue units (the request was later withdrawn), emergency medical assistance and basic humanitarian assistance. The European Union will deploy the EU Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team to the area, consisting of a unit leader, two security experts, three logistics experts, two healthcare experts, an information management expert, two experts to liaise with the Emergency Response Coordination Centre and technical support units.
The Government of the Republic of Slovenia has instructed the Slovenian Protection and Rescue Administration to implement the adopted decision. The value of the deployment is up to EUR 10,000.
