Students took on the role of Permanent Representatives of their countries to the UN Security Council. They discussed the devastating consequences of the civil war in Sudan as an example of a conflict dealt with by the UN Security Council. Secondary school students took on the role of diplomats at the UN General Assembly and discussed various aspects of the impact of AI on human rights.
The young visitors were addressed by Tanja Fajon, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. “In today's uncertain times, when the power of individual states increasingly prevails over the power of rules, we need to stress all the more that a functioning and effective multilateralism is in Slovenia's national interest,” the Minister said. “Continue to reflect on our common global future and strive for the values enshrined in the UN Charter,” she said as she presented them with their certificates and awards.
The university and secondary school students were welcomed in a video address by Ambassador Samuel Žbogar, Permanent Representative of Slovenia to the UN: “Countries should work together for the benefit of humanity and future generations, for which multilateralism based on dialogue, inclusiveness and solidarity is key.” He also told the young visitors: "Some of you may be future diplomats, while others may wish to pursue different paths. But we all share common values: respect for human rights, peace and security and an international order based on rules, not power."
The Model UN simulation of international negotiations is an excellent opportunity for young people to be actively involved in international affairs and diplomacy. Young people, as national delegates, take part in discussions on current international challenges and seek compromise solutions. The importance and relevance of Model UN has also been recognised by the UN General Assembly, which encourages Member States to run UN simulations precisely to raise awareness among young people about the importance of multilateralism and the UN. Ambassador Barbara Žvokelj, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, presented this topic to the visiting students. The challenges of multilateralism were also discussed by the Head of the Department for International Organisations, Tadeja Forštner Perklič. At the end of the simulation, Anej Bevk Peternelj, in his role as UN Secretary-General, said: "Let this day be more than a simulation. Let it be an invaluable insight not only into what it looks like to be a diplomat, but also into what it means to think like a diplomat. If we are to build a fairer and more equal society, we must also develop a deep understanding of others."
The event was part of the Ministry's activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.
