Slovenian Presidency
The main tasks of the Slovenian Presidency are summarized by the slogan "Our Waters, Our Future: Cross-Border Water Cooperation to Power Climate Resilience".
The main tasks of the Slovenian Presidency of the Water Convention in the next three-year period are:
- developing the climate resilience of transboundary river basins in the States Parties and beyond, at all levels of water governance – national, bilateral, sub-regional, regional and international. This will be achieved by further strengthening of international and national bodies, institutions and river commissions, by developing partnerships between key stakeholders in the international arena, and by using modern approaches and methods of integrated transboundary water management;
- deployment and dissemination of modern satellite and other high-tech tools and technologies for data capture and analysis in transboundary river basins of States Parties, in particular in the light of climate change and climate proofing;
- implementation of activities from the Water Convention Work Program 2025–2027: focus on the preparation of expert bases, manuals and strategic content, as well as the organization of events for the exchange of knowledge. Key areas include development of bilateral agreements, the establishment of international river commissions, adaptation and response of countries to climate change in the context of water management, monitoring of water status, fair and sustainable cross-border sharing of water resources, and the introduction of innovative approaches. These include source-to-sea approaches, the conjunctive management of transboundary surfaces and groundwater, and the management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems in river basins;
- accelerating membership enlargement: the Slovenian Presidency will actively promote the expansion of membership of the Water Convention and participate in the national processes of the countries in approaching the Convention, with the aim of completing the accession process in ten new members within a three-year period.
We will strive to connect and facilitate synergies between conventions operating in the field of transboundary waters, aquatic ecosystems and climate change: the Water Convention, the Convention on Wetlands, the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations (UN) Convention on Climate Change. We will follow the development of the activities of international processes, particularly the UN Water Decade, the Dushanbe Process and the process of preparing the UN Water Conference 2026.
