VIS is a joint visa information system of the Schengen States, which was launched on 11 October 2011. The system is intended to make visa procedures faster and safer. This means that the mission processing the application has to collect all 10 fingerprints, based on Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 and Regulation (EC) 767/2008. The fingerprints will be kept for 5 years on a joint server of Member States in Strasbourg.
