After the European Medicines Agency determined the AstraZeneca vaccine to be safe and effective, Slovenia restarted vaccinations using this vaccine. President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor, Prime Minister Janez Janša, President of the National Assembly Igor Zorčič and President of the National Council Alojz Kovšca were among those receiving a dose of the vaccine.
The basic objective of the National Vaccination Strategy adopted by the Government is to reduce mortality due to COVID-19, improve citizens’ health by preventing the severe course of the coronavirus disease in individuals, unburden the health system, kick-start the economy and restore education, transport, and cultural and social life, and other activities that were restricted due to the crisis. As protective measures alone cannot effectively prevent new infections with the SARS-COV-2 virus, this is expected to be achieved by vaccinating a large percentage of the population with safe and effective vaccines.
That is why earlier this week Prime Minister Janez Janša and his European counterparts called for a corrective mechanism and equal access to COVID-19 vaccines. Their discussion focused on equal access to and the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, which was also the main topic of the prime ministers' letter to President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council Charles Michel. They also discussed the additional supply options for COVID-19 vaccines and mechanisms to ensure that 70% of adult Europeans in EU Member States are vaccinated by the end of the summer.
