Slovenia Weekly: A special present on a national holiday

Slovenia celebrated Statehood Day this week, marking 33 years since its independence, when the then Assembly adopted key independence documents. "We chose the path of independence in 1991 and we should be proud of what we have achieved," said Prime Minister Robert Golob on this occasion. "Everything we have achieved in this time has fused into a success story, and although we are not a big country, we have continued to prove that we can compete with big visions. And we can always reach further," added the Prime Minister.

In a fitting tribute to this significant day, Slovenia received a special football present: the Slovenian football team drew their third match of the European Football Championship. The point earned in Cologne against England is as monumental as Triglav, as Matjaž Kek's team advanced to the round of 16. Finishing third in Group C, this fantastic success writes a new chapter in the history of Slovenian sport. This was Slovenia's sixth European Football Championship match in total, and their fifth draw, marking the first time in the history of major competitions that they have qualified for the knockout rounds.
