Slovenia Weekly: Culture Every Day

The 3rd of December marks the 25th anniversary of This Merry Day of Culture, a celebration in which cultural institutions and artists across Slovenia offer free admission and host a wide range of events for visitors of all ages. This special day, when institutions across the country open their doors, honours the birth of Slovenia's greatest poet, France Prešeren.

Launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2000 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Prešeren's birth (1800–1849), The Days of Open Doors of Slovenian Culture, also known as This Merry Day of Culture, aims to inspire people to visit cultural institutions. Last year, the celebration included an average of 66 events per day, drawing an average of 163 visitors per event. Music and dance performances were particularly popular, attracting around 36% of all visitors.

This year also marks the entry into force of the new National Programme for Culture, which places emphasis on culture as a public good. The programme brings decentralisation, better working conditions for cultural professionals and wider access to cultural content for all Slovenian citizens.
