Slovenia Weekly: Hard work pays off

"Your hard work did not go unnoticed. Slovenia's reputation in the international community has been further enhanced this year," said the Prime Minister in his address to Slovenian diplomats at the traditional Consultation of Slovenian Diplomats. He added that the credit for this goes to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs with the Slovenian representation to the United Nations playing a particularly prominent role. He highlighted the many political and, in particular, economic challenges facing Slovenia and the world.

On the first day of the 28th Consultation of Slovenian Diplomats, the Slovenian Government adopted the new Foreign Policy Strategy of the Republic of Slovenia, which outlines the guidelines for implementing and achieving foreign policy objectives. The new strategy is founded on the principles of inclusiveness, accountability, security, solidarity and knowledge. It is a modern, transparent and long-term oriented document.

Ahead of Independence and Unity Day on 26 December, which commemorates the announcement of the results of the plebiscite on Slovenia's independence, the main national celebration will take place this evening at Cankarjev dom. Independence and Unity Day commemorates the events of 26 December 1990, when the then Slovenian Assembly announced the results of a plebiscite in which 88.5% of eligible voters supported Slovenia's secession from the former Yugoslavia. The plebiscite took place three days earlier, on 23 December, 34 years ago.
