Ig Prison
The prison operates on the premises of Ig Castle (Sonnegg), which is situated on Pungert hill above the Ig settlement near Ljubljana. The castle building is more than 500 years old and was owned by various nobilities in the past. It began to be used for state purposes in the 20th century when the then Ministry of the Interior renovated the building, built an additional floor and first intended it for a police school. In 1947, convicted persons were placed in the building, and it was used for that purpose until 1956, with some interruptions. The purpose of the castle was changed, and thus until 1956, a correctional facility for men from Ljubljana operated in the premises, and later the Ig correctional facility and the Škofja Loka correctional facility. In 1956, women from the Brestanica correctional facility were placed in Ig Prison, and the castle is still used for the enforcement of criminal sanctions for women.
The central castle building is a four-wing two-storey mansion, with an arcaded courtyard in the middle. At the end of 2016, a facility adjacent to the castle building was renovated. It is intended for convicted women who serve their sentence in an open regime. The prison operates in buildings that were not built for the purpose of a prison. A more appropriate architectural design could significantly improve the quality of the life of convicted women during their imprisonment and their preparation for reintegration into society. A serious problem with the prison is that it does not have adequate facilities for convicted mothers with children and juveniles and convicted women who are physically impaired or require special care for health reasons. The prison does not have rooms for visits with the possibility of overnight visits. Due to facility's age and non-functionality and the lack of accompanying premises for carrying out various activities during the sentence, the project of solving the prison's spatial problems at the existing location is being carried out, which includes the renovation and extension of the prison, which will provide society, imprisoned persons and employees with a modern, safe, humane and inclusive prison, aimed at rehabilitation.
Some of the characteristics of imprisonment are different for women in comparison to men; therefore, it is necessary to respond appropriately to the needs of imprisoned women, which helps to significantly reduce their distress and risky behaviour. The serving of the sentence needs to include special programmes for women, with the possibility of including their children.
The prison tries to encourage all convicted women to spend their leisure time actively and in a quality manner. Such a way of spending free time strengthens their positive self-image and interpersonal relationships. For this purpose, the prison organises creative workshops on various topics that encourage creative expression. The convicted women paint, embroider, sew, and make greeting cards, ornaments, and jewellery. They actively participate in numerous events which they organise by themselves, with the help of prison employees. They also spend their free time doing exercise, engaging in literary activity and caring for the prison grounds.
