Convicted men from the court districts of Kranj, Krško and Novo mesto also serve their prison sentence in Ljubljana Prison if they are sentenced to a prison sentence of more than six months or if, after including remand, the remainder of their sentence exceeds six months of imprisonment, with the exception of convicted men up to the age of 26, who serve a prison sentence in the Celje Juvenile and Adult Prison. Remand prisoners are sent to Ljubljana Prison if detention is ordered by the Ljubljana District Court or the Kranj District Court. A convicted man who is already serving a prison sentence and a remand prisoner in the event of new sentencing or after the judgment that was the basis for detention becomes final, continue to serve their sentence in the prison in which they are at that time, if they would otherwise be placed in Ljubljana Prison on the basis of instructions. In accordance with the law regulating minor offences, Ljubljana Prison also carries out alternate prison sentence. The capacity of the prison is 135 persons.

Ljubljana Prison has been operating at its current location since December 1962, when it moved from Miklošičeva ulica Street. The central prison building is located in the eastern part of Ljubljana, between the Ljubljanica River in the north, the building of the Ljubljana Psychiatric Clinic, the Poljanski nasip Embankment and Povšetova ulica Street with a residential neighbourhood in the south, and in the east it borders a private company and Koblarjeva ulica Street. The building consists of basement rooms with storage areas, a kitchen with a dining area and a laundry room. On the ground floor and on the first, second and third floors, there are 17 single rooms and 37 rooms with three beds, a removal room, a room for exercise, a hospital room and two multipurpose rooms.

The prison building was renovated in 1996 and 2000, which partly improved the accommodation conditions of imprisoned persons, but no additional premises were acquired for the prisoners. The building was not constructed for the purpose of imprisonment and, due to its non-functionality, it is not appropriate for modern custodial programmes. The facilities are in bad condition and energy inefficient and the capacity does not meet the influx of imprisoned persons. The expansion and long-term preservation of the prison at this location is not possible, as the municipal spatial plan envisages the transfer of the prison to another location. For these reasons, a project for solving the spatial problems of the prison at the location in Dobrunje is being carried out, which will provide society, imprisoned persons and employees with a modern, safe, humane and inclusive prison, aimed at rehabilitation.
