Minister Fajon: Slovenia and Algeria, as non-permanent members of the Security Council, are united in their efforts for peace
"Minister Attaf and I agreed that economic cooperation is a vital aspect of bilateral relations, and we expressed our commitment to further strengthening economic ties between our two countries," said Minister Fajon after the talks. Since March this year, the agreement on economic cooperation between the two countries has been in force, with enhanced cooperation in the energy sector, particularly in the supply of natural gas between Slovenia's Geoplin and Algeria's Sonatrach. The two ministers also welcomed the progress of bilateral cooperation in the areas of migration and security, which both countries will continue to develop in the future.
On the multilateral front, they reaffirmed their shared commitment to addressing global issues together. "Slovenia and Algeria, as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, recognise the importance of joint efforts in maintaining peace and security. We will continue to work closely towards this goal," said Minister Fajon. She added: "We also cooperate well with Algeria on the Palestinian question, calling for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and detainees, the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip, and safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions. We also called for credible steps towards a lasting solution to the conflict, firmly grounded in a two-state solution." Minister Attaf welcomed Slovenia's upcoming presidency of the UN Security Council and ensured that Algeria would strongly support it, stating that Slovenia's success is also Algeria's success, the success of defenders of truth and legality, the success of those who strive for justice and equality.
Both ministers expressed deep concern about the war against Ukraine, which continues to inflict immense human suffering, death and destruction. They underlined the need for a just and lasting peace in line with the principles of the UN Charter and international law.
They also touched on the issue of Western Sahara, where Slovenia supports the UN-led process aimed at reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise.
During the official visit, ministers Tanja Fajon and Ahmed Attaf signed the Joint Declaration between the Republic of Slovenia and the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria. In the evening, they will officially open the premises of the Algerian Embassy in Ljubljana.
